How Much Can I Save on Heating with New Windows and Doors?

Energy bills are rising at an alarming rate but there is something you can do to save money without going cold this winter. Energy-efficient doors and windows dramatically reduce heat loss meaning you’ll use less gas or electricity to stay warm. But how much does double glazing actually save? We take a look at the figures supplied by the Glass and Glazing Federation.

Saving Money with New Double Glazing
Double glazing is made up of 2 panes of glass with a gas-filled void between them. The gas stops heat from transferring from one pane to the other, so the warmth stays inside and the cold stays outside. Double glazing has been installed in homes since 1952, but the technology has advanced hugely since then. So if you have older double glazed windows and doors, they will be outdated and much less efficient than brand new units.
Up until June 2022, windows and doors with a C-rating and above passed Building Regulations in England. Since June 2022, this has been upgraded to a B-rating but A-rated windows are available, so even greater efficiency is easily obtainable.
If your windows were fitted before June 2022, you could have C-rated windows in your home. Changing them to A-rated units would save you, on average, £185 a year. If you have single-glazed windows that were installed decades ago, you can save as much as £800 per year according to the Glass and Glazing Federation Calculator for a detached home. That’s a huge saving and can make all the difference to your bank balance and comfort over the coming years.

What are Energy Ratings?
Much like the energy rating on household appliances, doors and windows are given ratings from ‘G’ at the bottom up to ‘A+’ at the top.
The more energy efficient windows and doors are, the higher the rating. These ratings are issued by the British Fenestration Rating Council.
Thermal imagery shows you could be throwing money out the window, quite literally. The intense red areas show heat escaping through the old windows and door before upgrading to our new thermally efficient ones.
